The first time I visited the Portland Japanese Garden, I sought out the iconic tree I’d seen in so many photographs (there’s even a Flickr group). Most of those photographs were taken in the fall, though, and it was spring. I couldn’t identify it. I also imagined the tree was much taller, so I probably walked right past it, looking up.
We visited the garden for the second time this week as part of an anniversary trip to Portland. This time, I had a better idea of where to find the tree. I examined some photos of it more closely, and realized it was probably not very tall. I also took note of the pond behind it. Success! I recognized it immediately on this visit. (It helped that a photographer was camped out in front of it with a tripod.)
