Last weekend, I learned how to make jam! After hearing about so many friends jamming and canning, I was getting more and more curious about the process. Luckily, my friend Adrienne of A Big Mouthful was very generous and willing to teach. Together with Dawn of Vegan Moxie, we made strawberry jam with balsamic and black pepper. And it’s delicious. See Adrienne’s post for the recipe, and Dawn’s post for more about the process.
It’s definitely not as difficult as I expected, though it does take planning, special equipment, and strong arms for stirring! But it’s so rewarding to fill and process the jars, knowing you’ve got homemade, quality jam that will last for months or make a great gift. Plus, you get to control the amount of sugar. We all agreed that store-bought jam, even the fancier kind, is usually far too sweet to enjoy. Not our jam, though.
I’m eating more toast this week as a vehicle for the jam, and I’m thinking of making fair scones as well. I suppose peanut butter and jelly (well, jam) sandwiches are probably going to become a mainstay in my diet for the next, oh I don’t know, several months… No complaints here!
